January 10, 2008 Central Texas - DT Texas Department of Transportation Announces New License Plate Rules Texas consumers are now allowed to keep their old license plates when they sell or trade their vehicle. Retained plates can be transferred to a new vehicle through your local county tax assessor’s office for a fee of $5.00 or you can destroy and dispose of the old plates. Dealers are required to deface, destroy, and dispose of license plates left on vehicles they take in trade or purchase after January 1, 2008. Click Here for More Information from TX DOT
